Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng, is a commonly known super herb that has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. In Ayurveda-- an ancient system of traditional medicine used in India and other Asian countries, the herbal preparation of ashwagandha has been called “rasayana”, which translates to: “an elixir that works… to increase human health and longevity.”
Ashwagandha is a powerful adaptogen, which are stress-response modifiers that help to increase an organism’s resistance to stress by enhancing its ability to adapt and survive. Adaptogens are crucial to add into our diets in the world we are living in today due to so many people’s bodies and minds being under constant attack from general lifestyle stressors, environmental toxins, lack of sleep, etc.
There have been many scientific studies carried out to determine the efficacy of ashwagandha as a treatment for various kinds of diseases and for its use as a tonic for its abilities to strengthen, stimulate and calm the nervous system. Ashwagandha is powerful for promoting cognitive function, and was found useful in helping children with memory deficit disorders and in older aged people who were losing their memory. Along with this, it has also been found to aid people who are struggling with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Hungtington’s and Alzeimer’s diseases (at any stage) by slowing, stopping, reversing or removing neuritic atrophy and synaptic loss-- two of the main causes of these cognitive impairments. In terms of stress, ashwagandha has been shown to have calming effects and be a mood stabilizer in conditioners such anxiety and depression.
We have chosen to incorporate an ashwagandha paste made from both the root and leaf extracts into our Adrenal Supertonic due to its powerful abilities to calm the nervous system, reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and to enhance overall cognitive function.
