Q&A with Michael

Q: What does swimming mean to you?
A: “Swimming, to me, is just as much a gift as an outlet. It’s a comfortable, safe place for me to just race and enjoy the moment.”

Q: What sets you apart from other athletes?
A: “I realize I have something that many athletes don’t, and that’s a level of support and sacrifice from my parents. I see that no stone won’t be unturned for me to succeed.”

Q: What’s the most significant contributor to your success?
A: “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the sacrifices my parents had made before I was a world champion, before I was an Olympic champion, before I was a world record holder. Because none of that would have happened without that.”

Q: What does living with intention mean to you?
A: “I think it’s important to recognize that living with intention isn’t just inside a sport or a discipline; it’s what happens outside of that – what happens in your family, with your relationships, with your friendships, even your mental health. So, I think living with intention is when I step off the pool deck; how am I loving the people around me? How am I treating my friends? Recognizing that I have something to give and something that I can use to bless others… I think that’s living with intention.”
