vitamin c skin science

Vitamin C is often reduced to a single promise: glow.

But brightness is simply the visible side effect of something much deeper happening beneath the surface.

From a biochemical perspective, Vitamin C is not just a helpful antioxidant. It is required for life. And in skin, its role extends far beyond neutralizing free radicals. According to chemist Marie Veronique Nadeau, founder of her namesake skincare line Marie Veronique, the real story of Vitamin C begins at the level of collagen synthesis, cellular signaling, and even epigenetic regulation.

This is not trend chemistry. It is biology.

Vitamin C Is Required for Collagen Formation

There is a reason scurvy, the classic Vitamin C deficiency disease, presents with fragile skin and poor wound healing. Without Vitamin C, the body cannot properly build collagen.

At the molecular level, Vitamin C hydroxylates proline, an essential step in collagen biosynthesis. That hydroxylation process allows collagen to form a stable triple helix structure. Without it, collagen fibers are weak and disorganized.

No Vitamin C equals no collagen.

This is why topical Vitamin C is not simply a brightening agent. It supports the structural integrity of skin tissue. It helps stabilize what is already there and supports the formation of new collagen in response to signaling molecules, including retinoids.

It Functions as a Cellular Cofactor, Not Just an Antioxidant

Most people understand Vitamin C as an antioxidant. And it is. It neutralizes reactive oxygen species generated by UV exposure, pollution, and normal metabolic processes.

But its role goes deeper.

Vitamin C acts as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions. Emerging research shows that it supports DNA demethylation through activation of TET enzymes, influencing gene expression related to keratinocyte proliferation and epidermal thickening.

Why does that matter?

As skin ages, it becomes thinner. Epidermal thinning contributes to crepiness, fragility, and barrier decline. Vitamin C, through these epigenetic mechanisms, may support regenerative processes that maintain skin density over time.

That is not surface level glow. That is structural resilience.

Not All Vitamin C Is the Same

Much of the confusion around Vitamin C comes from formulation differences.

The gold standard form remains L ascorbic acid. It is biologically active and directly usable by the skin. However, it requires an acidic environment for stability and penetration, typically a pH around 4 to 4.5. For many people, this works beautifully. For others, especially those with sensitive or inflamed skin, that acidity can be difficult to tolerate.

This is where derivatives enter the conversation.

Vitamin C derivatives such as sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, glyceryl ascorbate, and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate are more stable and often gentler. Some offer additional functional benefits. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate has been shown to reduce oxidation in congested pores. Glyceryl ascorbate supports hydration and barrier function. Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate have demonstrated collagen supportive and pigment modulating effects.

The distinction is not which one is better. It is which one aligns with the condition of your skin.

In her own brand, Marie Veronique reflects this spectrum through two different Vitamin C formulations: an ascorbic acid based Vitamins C+E+Ferulic Serum for those who tolerate and benefit from a lower pH approach, and a derivative based C Therapy Serum for skin that requires a more adaptive delivery system. The philosophy is consistent with her chemist perspective. Everybody needs Vitamin C. Not everybody needs it delivered the same way.

Vitamin C and Retinol: A Strategic Synergy

One persistent myth is that Vitamin C and retinol cannot coexist. From a chemist’s perspective, that misunderstanding overlooks one of the most strategic pairings in longevity focused skincare.

Retinol converts to retinoic acid within the cell and acts as a signaling molecule. It instructs fibroblasts to increase collagen production and influences cell turnover and pigmentation pathways.

Vitamin C ensures that the enzymatic machinery required for collagen formation can function properly. Retinol sends the signal. Vitamin C supports the biochemical step that makes that signal effective.

Together, they influence not only collagen density but epidermal thickening through complementary mechanisms. Retinol can increase TET enzyme expression. Vitamin C acts as the cofactor that recharges those enzymes. The result is synergy at the level of gene regulation.

From a longevity standpoint, that pairing is strategic, not trendy.

Stability Matters

Vitamin C is notoriously unstable. When it oxidizes, it can darken in color and lose potency. A serum that shifts significantly from its original shade may be degrading. Stability depends on pH, packaging, supporting antioxidants, and overall formulation architecture.

Combinations such as Vitamin C with Vitamin E and ferulic acid are respected in scientific circles because they enhance stability and broaden antioxidant protection against environmental stress.

But again, the goal is not to chase the highest percentage or the most aggressive formulation. It is to match chemistry to biology.

The Bigger Picture

When viewed through a chemist’s lens, Vitamin C is foundational.

It participates in collagen formation. It supports mitochondrial and DNA resilience through antioxidant and epigenetic mechanisms. It interacts strategically with retinoids. It contributes to epidermal thickness and structural integrity over time.

Glow is the visible benefit. Longevity is the deeper one.

The real question is not whether to use Vitamin C. It is whether you are using a form, concentration, and delivery system that aligns with your skin’s biology and long term goals.

Because beneath the brightness, Vitamin C is doing far more than most people realize.
